Cheap Electric Guitars Near Term Plan

May 12, 2008 – 7:16 pm

Allright, had to take a few days off but ShortNUgly’s back. Here’s what’s coming up.

Even though I fell in love with the Korina V, I will still give the other quality cheap electric guitar manufacturers a fair shot. The next two I will be tackling are Dean’s and Ibanez’s. I will target the ones with the criteria I laid out before, under $500 and friendly to the ShortNUgly among us.

Metallica update. I got my Jeep’s shocks replaced just to be able to make the trip to the Pima County Fairgrounds, I was thinking I was gonna have to hitchhike there but getting new shocks on the front wheels was a lot cheaper than I thought (money that could have gone to my cheap electric guitar dammit!), I got the baby’s at Autozone and had my cousin install them. The trip is on.

If there are any tall hot babe’s in Tucson who like ShortNUgly broke pathetic losers that need a ride to Metallica, leave a comment and I’ll put you on the list.

Oh, don’t forget to Digg The ShortNUgly one.

Got My Metallica Ticket!

May 5, 2008 – 7:29 pm

Well, I was fortunate enough to learn from Sammy that Metallica was coming to Tucson, yes, that’s how out of the loop I’ve been. When you don’t listen to the radio or watch too much TV that’s what happens! Well, me and the doggettes got into the car

and headed down to the local Catalina Mart, I walked and asked, “Where are those damn tickets!!!!!,” the kind lady at the counter put that baby in my hand and charged me $49 bucks, I was ecstatic.

I haven’t been to a concert since I saw Disturbed at KFMA day a long time ago, like I said, once I stopped playing guitar I fell out of the loop big time as I chose to concentrate on other things. Well, I’m glad to be back and having an opportunity to blog about it. I’m really hoping they allow camera’s at the show so I can share some photos and vids with you all!

My beautiful ticket

If you want to come to Tucson and see Metallica you can get your tickets here:

Next week I’m heading down to Guitar Center to play some Ibanez’s and Dean’s, it looks like its coming down to those three brands, Epiphone, Ibanez, and Dean, since based on most of my research they seem to provide the best quality value guitars.

Damn, I wish the Korina V was just a little bit cheaper!

Quasi-Review Of A Great Cheap Guitar: Epiphone Korina Flying V

May 4, 2008 – 8:03 pm

The Epiphone Korina Flying V Electric Guitar is a part of the Epiphone’s Designer Collection Series. It is a reissue of the Classic 58 Korina V, and as my previous post states, it really captivated me.

Epiphone Korina VzZounds

Now the specs are pretty standard, Alnico humbuckers, gold hardware, rosewood fingerboard, string through set bridge and, this is very important to me, a scale of 24.57”. Now you may be wondering why I highlighted scale, well let me explain.

Cheap Electric Guitars Around Town

May 4, 2008 – 2:23 am

Well, today I spent the a couple of hours playing some guitars around town (Tucson, AZ). I went to a couple of shops, one was a pawn shop where they had an Epiphone X-plorer. It was cherry red with some black outline, it played well but there was one problem, it had a whammy bar, a Rose I believe. Other than that it played pretty well, nice rosewood fretboard, played with some fluidity but its not really a fast guitar so I can’t complain. It was the only one they had I would have considered buying but at $349.99 there would have to be some negotiating with the shop owners.

Afterwards I went to Rainbow Guitars (the date on the pic is wrong so disregard, I changed batteries and didnt correct the date)

A Tucson institution if there ever was one, and played some nice cheap guitars, really nice ones. I put my Read the rest of this entry »

Not So Cheap Electric Guitars: Gibson That Which ShortNUgly Cannot Afford

May 2, 2008 – 2:11 pm

Now, you may be wondering why El ShortNUgly has decided to write of a guitar that he cannot currently afford, but the answer is quite simple - Respect. Since this is a new blog and I’m in search of a good cheap electric guitar I have decided to do a small profile on all major guitar makers, and ShortNUgly cannot ignore a maker of such quality as Gibson. They are still my favorite brand, it’s just that I cannot afford their gear (Yes, I’ll do a profile on Gibson’s affordable little brother - Epiphone).

Gibson is world famous, particularly for their beautiful Les Paul Standard

Les-Paul Guitar

but also for the X-plor,

X-plorer Guitar

the SG,

SG Guitar

the Firebird,

Firebird Guitar

the Flying V,

Jimmy Hendrix Flying V

and more recently the Reverse Flying V

reverse flying v

(If I can ever afford a Gibson, it will be either the SG or the Reverse V due to its easily reached high frets). They have others as well but these are the primary ones. There is not one negative thing I can say about these guitars, they are beautifully crafted, wonderful to play, and just plain El Hotto! We have Orville Gibson to thank for this wonderful brand, he may have been loco but the man was a musical instrument genius. Thanks Orville.

I used to have an Epiphone Les Paul, of course it’s not the same as the real thing but it does have a very similar feel, that feel is like the touch of silk on a velvet glove, better than making love to woman of your dreams. I’ll have more later on Gibson.

This weekend I will also figure out how to upload my old bands music so you, my worldwide fans can listen to ShortNUgly’s beautiful music. If anyone knows how to do this please leave ShortNUgly a comment on how to get it done.

My Basic Cheap Guitar Criteria

May 1, 2008 – 3:04 am

My cheap electric guitar criteria is something I completely blanked on, you see, I’m cheap but it doesn’t mean ShortNUgly doesn’t have standards, and now that my search has begun in earnest I figured I would let my beloved audience know.

I shoulda pointed out this stuff first but oh well, I got caught up in my excitement, better late than never.

My preferences are rosewood fingerboards, why? I don’t really know, its the color I guess, and it just feels more natural to me. Much of it is my roots, my first guitar was a Harmony Flying V replica, that thing was awesome, all my friends dug it and it became a legendary guitar in my neighborhood. Here’s a pic of what it looked like: Read the rest of this entry »

Quest For Cheap Electric Guitars

April 24, 2008 – 1:57 pm

Well, the time has arrived and ShortAnUgly begins his quest for the ultimate bargain gear; Cheap Electric Guitars. A little about ShortAnUgly can be found in my about page, but let me give you a brief overview. My name is actually Carlos and I have played guitar off and on for many years, the last time being about 8 years ago. I thought I was done forever but alas, just as I was warned by musicians, “the bug always comes back,” and damn if that bug didn’t come back and bite me in the rear end. Ouch!!

Since I’m on a budget I began to wonder how I could afford to buy a nice guitar at a cheap price, the more ShortAnUgly thought about it the more I got to realizing that just because I’m a cheapo that doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice quality. Thus began my epic quest for cheap gear. Yes, I now have G.A.S. for affordable gear. Let the epic journey begin!
